Why crash diets are bad
If it sounds too good to be true then it probably is...

We are all looking for that magic potion that will make us reed slim overnight. But here are six good reasons to avoid crash diets:

1. Muscle loss
This is inevitable when losing weight anyway but it happens more often, and more dramatically, with crash diets. It can, however, be curbed by combining exercise with a sensible diet consisting of reduced portions of grains and cereals, fruit and vegetables, milk and milk products, meat, fish and/or chicken, legumes and a modest amount of fat and sugar.

2. Hunger pangs, food cravings and rapid weight loss
If you want to lose weight and keep it off then all of these are a no-no. A healthy diet will not have any of these symtoms.

3. Omitting certain foods
Emphasis on specific foods or the omission of entire food groups is not recommended. Although weight gain is often the sum total of numerous factors, it's important to address the eating habits that got you into your 'weighty situation' in the first place. Following a balanced weight-reducing diet will enable you to form sound eating habits that can be maintained.

4. Insufficient vitamins and minerals
Balanced slimming diets guarantee the consumption of sufficient vitamins and minerals. This will keep you healthy and help you to maintain your blood sugar levels. Low blood sugar levels often lead to food cravings.

5. Limited selections
A weight-loss diet based on a limited selection of foods can lead to boredom and an inability to keep up your efforts.
You should also not fall into the trap of believing that there are good and bad foods. This could lead to bingeing and yo-yo eating.

6. Eating special foods
It is a fallacy that certain foods (such as apple cider vinegar and grapefruit) have special weight-loss properties.
