Question
I am a postgraduate student at Wits (Information Systems Hons) and I have to make a decision between offers from two companies. They will be reffered to as Company A and Company B.
Company A is a small consultling firm, whereas Company B is a large international firm. Company B is an auditing firm (one of the big 4), but they have an IT Advisory. They have offered me a place in the graduate recruitment programme and the training programme sounds very promising.
Company A, a small company is where I did my internship in June/July and it was great. They do not have a grad programme as they are small, but they have other training programmes. Company A is offering 160 000 p.a, whereas Company B is offering me 115/125 000 p.a.
As a foreigner, I am very fortunate to have offers from these two companies. However, I am unable to make up my mind. So....Big firm with very little pay (and I wont have the pleasure of living with the folks for the 1st year, because they do not live here), but intense good training programmes...or Small firm with more pay and hands on experience (plus training of course)???? Please help.
Answer
Nangula, I am sure that there are many readers of the Women24 Careers website who are very envious of the situation that you find yourself at this time – you are certainly very lucky to have these two employers who have clearly your worth.
This is, as I am sure you will agree, a very difficult question to answer in the limited space of this electronic medium. It is clear from your question that both organisations have very positive aspects that are no doubt very attractive to you at this time. But, the one thing that would be paramount for me, if I was in this situation, is what would be the long-term advantages of working for each of the firms. You will need to consider what each of the companies is offering in terms of training programmes, the level of skills and competencies that you will gain, the opportunities that there are for self-development, the opportunities of secondment to international offices, your future marketability.
It is, in my opinion, all about personal development and long-term benefit.
Good luck with this decision – and with your future endeavours!
